Urban Areas: How Are Mediterranean Cities Innovating to Cope with the Climate Crisis?
8 November 2023. From 18:00 To 19:30 | Conference | English | French | CaixaForum Macaya, BarcelonaAround 70% of the Mediterranean population is living in urban areas that are disproportionately affected by climate change (heat waves, extreme weather events, air pollution). Indeed, urban infrastructures are often inadequate to respond to such challenges and at the same time aggravate current societal cleavages.
Yet, as the impacts of climate change become increasingly apparent, some cities in the Mediterranean region are at starting to implement innovative strategies to address the challenges posed by this crisis. With their unique geographical, social, and economic characteristics, Mediterranean cities are finding creative solutions to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate. In this session, we explore the remarkable initiatives and pioneering approaches that Mediterranean cities are adopting to build sustainable, resilient, and climate-smart urban environments.
We delve into a range of topics showcasing the innovative practices being implemented in Mediterranean cities, and look more closely at two case studies. As such, through practical examples from the city of Barcelona and the city of Izmir we will analyse how both were able to significantly curb their CO2 emissions and gradually adapt to the effects of climate change through bespoke solutions, including sustainable urban planning and design, integration of renewable energy, and the development of green infrastructure.
By highlighting successful case studies and best practices, we aim to inspire and foster cross-city collaboration, enabling the replication of effective strategies in other urban areas facing similar climate challenges.
This session of the Med Dialogues 2030 series takes place at the CaixaForum Macaya, Pg. de Sant Joan, 108, Barcelona. Free entrance with prior registration.
