Farming in a Hotter Climate: Adaptation Strategies for a Resilient Mediterranean Agriculture
18 October 2023. From 18:00 To 19:30 | Conference | English | French | CaixaForum Macaya, BarcelonaAs the global climate continues to change, the Mediterranean region faces increasing challenges in sustaining its agricultural productivity. Rising temperatures, water scarcity, changing precipitation patterns, and the heightened frequency of extreme weather events pose significant threats to the region’s agricultural sector, and farmers are confronted with harsher climate conditions and uncertainties that question the sustainability of their activity, livelihood prospects and food security.
This session will delve into a range of adaptation strategies tailored specifically for Mediterranean agriculture and aimed at building resilience and ensuring the continuity in agricultural production. Discussions will touch upon diverse topics such as crop diversification, water management, agroforestry, improved soil management, and knowledge exchange towards climate-smart agriculture solutions. We will explore the benefits and practical implementation of these strategies, showcasing real-life examples and success stories from both shores of the region. By understanding and adopting these adaptation measures, farmers can enhance the resilience of their farming systems, mitigate climate-related risks, and secure the future of Mediterranean agriculture. This session serves as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, discussions, and collaboration among various stakeholders (scientists, policymakers, practitioners…) implemented in the Mediterranean region. By working together and harnessing the collective wisdom and experiences, we can foster innovative solutions and strategies that address the challenges of farming in a hotter climate.
This session of the Med Dialogues 2030 series takes place at the CaixaForum Macaya, Pg. de Sant Joan, 108, Barcelona. Free entrance with prior registration.
