Transforming Arab Economies: Traveling the Knowledge and Innovation Road4 May 2013- 5 May 2013 | Conference | ISESCO, Rabat
Knowledge has always been central to development, and it is especially critical for the future of the Arab world. To cope with the daunting challenges they face, particularly the need to create jobs and to develop more productive economies, Arab countries would do well to embrace a strategy for a knowledge‐ and innovation‐driven economy. This is the theme of Transforming Arab Economies: Traveling the Knowledge and Innovation Road (World Bank 2013), a report developed by the CMI, together with the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and ISESCO.
This conference addresses the challenges and opportunities faced by the Arab countries in developing and implementing strategies based on knowledge and innovation to spur growth and employment. It highlights examples of successful national and local knowledge‐economy initiatives in the Arab region, while also showcasing relevant examples from the rest of the world.
The main objectives of the conference are to disseminate and launch Transforming Arab Economies: Traveling the Knowledge and Innovation Road; discuss concrete ways and means to strengthen knowledge‐ and innovation‐driven development strategies in Arab countries; create a network of practitioners and policymakers who can move ahead with such an agenda in the Arab world; stimulate greater integration and regional collaboration, notably in the Euro‐Mediterranean space, on knowledge‐ and innovation‐related programs; and explore the idea of a state summit that could lead to a common knowledge‐economy agenda for the Arab world.
