The global order is becoming more competitive, fragmented, and interconnected. Geopolitical rivalries increasingly extend into supply chains, infrastructure, and technology, while climate pressures and resource shocks add further instability. In this context, connectivity and resilience have become central to international cooperation and contestation alike.

The Euro Mediterranean region reflects these dynamics. Rather than isolated crises, it is shaped by strong interdependence, where developments quickly spill across borders through trade, energy, and migration. At the same time, regional and global actors are shifting towards flexible, issue-based partnerships, recalibrating their relations in a context of multi alignment.

For the European Union, these changes highlight both its continued relevance and its internal challenges, including fragmented approaches and differing threat perceptions across Member States. Bridging these gaps is key to strengthening its role in the region.

The EuroMeSCo Annual Conference 2026 “Strategic partnerships under pressure: Rewiring Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in an age of global competition” aims to assess future scenarios for Euro Mediterranean cooperation and identify practical policy recommendations. It will also reflect on how existing frameworks and initiatives can become more coherent, operational, and adaptable in order to respond effectively to an increasingly complex and competitive environment
