In July 2023, Spain assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union in an international context marked by the ongoing war in Ukraine. In the midst of this turbulent situation, the Mediterranean has become a priority for both Spain and Europe. Both shores are called to collaborate to address important shared regional challenges that, in turn, represent opportunities to build the Mediterranean project together.

Among the current challenges are the ecological transition, climate change, economic competitiveness and the labor market, energy challenges and the promotion of women’s rights. All of these issues directly affect the citizens of the region and demand coordinated actions.

At a time of global uncertainty, cooperation between Spain, the European Union and the Mediterranean countries becomes an essential tool to promote measures for a transformative Mediterranean agenda and thus achieve greater stability and well-being for citizens. The Spanish presidency offers a unique opportunity to promote this long-term collaboration and move towards a joint project for the Mediterranean and Europe.

Política Exterior and the European Institute of the Mediterranean, co-editors of the afkar/ideas magazine, and Nebrija University organise this event to debate Spanish and European foreign policy towards the Mediterranean in memory of Josep Piqué who was co-director of afkar/ideas and a great promoter of Euro-Mediterranean relations.
