Syria stands at a historic crossroads, wrestling with the monumental task of rebuilding a country devastated by more than a decade of war while grappling with profound uncertainty about its future. The collapse of the old regime and the emergence of a new government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa have reshaped the political landscape, yet security remains fragile as Islamic State affiliates continue sporadic attacks and the chaotic end of camps like al-Hol underscores ongoing challenges around former ISIS detainees and global responsibilities for justice and reintegration.

Amid reports of sectarian violence and attacks on Alawite and other minority communities, questions persist about the guarantees and conditions under which exiled Syrians can safely return. Against this backdrop, the enormous and multifaceted task of reconstruction—social, political, and economic—will be central to this discussion with renowned experts organised by IEMed and Fundación Análisis de Política Exterior, co-editors of the journal afkar/ideas devoted to the analysis of the Middle East and the Euro-Mediterranean area.
