Studying Irregular Traffic Migration: A Matter of Science, Politics and Ethics

3 December 2014. From 18:30 | Workshop | English | IEMed, Barcelona

Academic debates on irregular migration not only describe an existing reality but become an element in its construction process at a time when discursive practices allow policy statements that conceptualize and speak to this phenomenon. The main objective of this seminar is to explore this process through the interaction between the academic, political and ethical dimensions in the study of irregular traffic migrations in Europe, focusing especially on the Mediterranean region.

Ahmet Içduygu, Director of the Migration Research Center at Koç University (Turkey), gives the lecture “Studying Irregular Traffic Migration: A Question of Science, Politics and Ethics” in a new session of the cycle “Interpreting the Mediterranean” today “in collaboration with the Master in Immigration Management (UPF) which highlights the methodological and ethical challenges posed by academic debates on migration and the political implications that can lead to the resulting conclusions.”Interpreting the Mediterranean today” is a series of conferences to understand and reflect on the Mediterranean region. It is an initiative of the IEMed with eleven university master’s programs dedicated to studying the Mediterranean area.
