Since the deadly Hamas attacks of October 7th, order across the Middle East has become increasingly precarious. The destruction of Gaza and southern Lebanon, the killing of key Hamas and Hizballah leaders, the fall of Bashar Al Assad, the weakening of Iran, and ongoing questions about the role of the US have shaken the very principles that underpin order across the Middle East. In this lecture, we will reflect on the ways in which order has been contested and the causes of such contestation, arguing that the Middle East has entered an interregnum—a period in which the old order is fraying, but a new order is yet to emerge.
