Presentation of “Horizonte”, by María Iglesías

22 May 2024. From 19:00 | Presentation | Spanish | IEMed, Barcelona

The writer and journalist María Iglesías presents her novel “Horizon” (Edhasa, 2023)

The protagonist of the novel, Ketu Simo, is inspired by the life adventures of the young Cameroonian Sani Ladan who arrived on foot to Morocco, swam to Ceuta, and then graduated in International Relations. From there, Iglesías creates the fiction that Ketu discovers and relaunches the project to unite Africa and Europe through the Strait of Gibraltar, a project that has existed between Spain and Morocco since the 1980s, although dormant

María Iglesias (Seville, 1976) is a writer and journalist. For a decade she has worked as a columnist for elDiario.es and as a specialized editor on international politics, migrations and human rights. She has been a current affairs analyst on Canal Sur Radio and before she worked for Público, SER, EFE, Canal Sur TV, Jot Down, Paramount Comedy Channel, Diario of Seville.

Iglesias had previously published “El granado de Lesbos” (2019) and the documentary “Contramarea”, both inspired by the epic of immigrants and rescuers in the Aegean that she covered in situ as a journalist, and “Lazos de humo” (2011), whose protagonist was a Cantabrian boy who emigrated to Andalusia to work as a charcoal burner at the end of the 19th century.
