Muslims of Europe. Debating the Muslim Presence in Europe
15 December 2015- 16 December 2015 | Conference | English | Palau de Pedralbes, BarcelonaThe tragic terror attacks in France and in Denmark (2015), perpetrated by radicalized Muslims, born and raised in Europe, have triggered a heated debate on a wide range of issues, such as the role of Muslim citizens in Europe, identity, inclusion, religiosity, secularism, extremism, radicalization and islamophobia, among others.
Despite the growing amount of literature, reports and articles published on the matter, the various public policies implemented and different initiatives from concerned stakeholders, at the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) we believe that there is an urgent need to share and exchange ideas, opinions and practices from an interdisciplinary perspective. Therefore, with the present seminar, which gathers scholars, experts and practitioners from all over Europe mainly but also from other regions of the world, we intend to analyse from a comparative perspective both transversal issues and case-studies. On the one hand, the panels proposed explores public policies, regulation and legal frameworks, representation and institutionalization, social and civic engagement of Muslim European citizens as well as the current challenges they face, linked both to their daily lives as well as to global threats. On the other hand, roundtable discussions allow participants to focus on specific issues and case-related studies that extend the debate to more specific questions.
