The City in The Islamic World: Medieval Town Planning & The Preservation of Architectural Heritage in Fez

In this lecture, Professor Said Ennahid will provide a brief overview of the urban-architectural history of the city of Fez, Morocco. Followed by a detailed examination and critical assessment of major archaeological and historic preservation projects conducted in Fez since the declaration of the city as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

Said Ennahid is an archaeologist and Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. He is an Expert Member of the International Committee on Historic Towns and Villages (CIVVIH) and an Associate Member of The International Scientific Committee on Twentieth Century Heritage (ISC20C) at the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). Ennahid’s research and teaching interests include Islamic Archaeology, Art, Architecture and Urbanism, Medieval Historiography and Historical Geography, French Colonial-period Architecture and Urbanism, and Cultural Heritage of Contemporary Islamic societies of North Africa. Some of his publications are: Historical Archeology in North Africa (ed., Elsevier eBooks, 2023), “Searching for Rome: French Colonial Archeology and Urban planning in Morocco” (in Rome and the Colonial City, Rethinking the Grid, 2022) and “Adding a Layer: Functioning Muslim Shrines at Archeological Sites in Northwestern Morocco” (with E. Ross, in Berlin Studies of the Ancient World, Vol. 40, 2017).
