Shifting Practices to Restore the Mediterranean’s Ecological Balance
At the fourth session of the Med Dialogues +2030 series, held on 10 November 2025, marine scientist and conservation expert Giuseppe di Carlo joined Laura Secorun, moderator of the 2025 series, for an in-depth conversation, which essentially focused on how to accelerate positive change and turn collective awareness into concrete restoration of the Mediterranean Sea’s ecological health.
Giuseppe di Carlo is a recognised ocean conservationist with over 15 years of experience in marine science and conservation strategy. He notably spent 12 years with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), including as director of the Mediterranean Marine Initiative, supporting countries across the region in reaching key conservation and management targets. Before that, he served as director of the Isola di Ustica Marine Reserve in Italy and worked for Conservation International as senior manager for climate change, providing guidance to programmes worldwide. He is currently Ocean Advisor at the Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy and Board Director of the Galapagos Life Fund. Throughout his career, he has overseen the operations and management of marine protected areas (MPAs), from financial administration to stakeholder engagement and efforts to combat illegal fishing. He has also led initiatives in capacity building, policy advocacy, and scientific research, contributing to the creation of new MPAs and the strengthening of existing ones.
