Living in Diversity: A Critical Reflection
12 July 2017. From 10:00 | Conference | Catalan | Abadía de Montserrat, MontserratThe humanistic theme of this Academic Day focuses on one of the social experiences lived intensely in countries, especially in the Western sphere: the pluralism of cultures, ideologies, political powers, religions, individual practices and collective behaviors.
Diversity is present in all manifestations of human existence. This increasingly complex situation due to immigration also calls for a serious reflection: it requires identifying the challenges posed by this pluralism and the duty to guide possible solutions, that is, trying to move from “multicultural” to “Intercultural”. It is necessary to overcome a coexistence of closed ghettos and reach a culture capable of assuming a complex horizon. Open coexistence is especially necessary in the religious sphere, since at heart believing in a transcendent leads to respect for human dignity, respect and peace between people. Violence, war and terrorism in the name of a deity are contradictory. When religion mixes with the economy with the desire for domination and violent attitudes, which unfortunately has been repeated throughout history, it should be a disorder that has been severely suppressed. It is more than ever necessary to reflect on the causes that separate society, as the current situation requires us to be open to relationships with a global dimension.
The conference, which revolves around two round tables: “Educating and communicating in a plural society” and “Intercultural challenges for a world in crisis”, is attended by numerous representatives of institutions and civil society.
