Towards a Catalan Islam?

27 November 2013. From 18:00 | Workshop | Catalan | IEMed, Barcelona

The characteristics of the Muslim community in Catalonia and the perceptions it has from various areas of Catalan society are discussed at the IEMed in the seminar “Towards a Catalan Islam?”. The event is part of the conference “Living Islam in Southern Europe” organized in Barcelona from 26 to 30 September by the Research Group on Social Exclusion and Control of the University of Barcelona. The conference aims to assess the existence and characteristics of a transnational Islam in the Muslim communities of the countries of south-western Europe: Spain, Italy and Portugal.

The debate begins with Natalia Andújar from the Educaislam training center and the Muslim Network, who highlights the need to find a legal framework to protect Islam in Catalonia. For his part, Tawfiq Cheddadi, imam of the Great Mosque of Terrassa, emphasizes that Islam is universal and that it has been present in Catalonia for many centuries.

Muhammed Iqbal, of the Camí de la Pau Association, stresses the need to work on an education that allows future generations of Catalans to know Islam without prejudice.

The event also features the interventions of experts from different research centers and actors in Catalan civil society.
