The Words that Nourish Everyday Life: African Oral Manifestations in Europe

From 18:30 | Conference | Spanish | IEMedIn West Africa, different kinds of narrators who stood out for their eloquence, excellent memory, and musical talent have transmitted oral traditions for centuries. Various factors have led to their arrival in European countries such as France and Spain, where they continue to carry out some of their traditional functions. As we will explore in the lecture, African traditions, often adapted to new societies, are present in countries far from where they originated.
A conference by Vicente Enrique Montes Nogales, Associate Professor (Department of English, French and German Philology) and Researcher at the University of Oviedo, where he teaches workshops on African Literatures, among other courses. He received his PhD from the same university with the thesis La influencia de la épica áfricana occidental en “L’étrange destin de Wangrin” de Amadou Hampâté Bâ (2012). Montes Nogales coordinated the volume Cuentos, mitos, leyendas y fábulas de África y de otros lugares. Análisis comparatista (2019), and wrote the chapter titled “Griottes, juglaresas y artistas andalusíes: formación y actividades”. He is the screenwriter of the DVD collection African Writers, and Literary Editor at the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library, as well as member of the project ‘El español, lengua mediadora de nuevas identidades’ (2014-2017). In addition to publishing book chapters and articles in scientific journals, he is the author of the monographs La memoria épica de Amadou Hampâté Ba (2015) and Literaturas orales africanas: de África occidental a España (2020).
