Sustainable development, education and science diplomacy: challenges and opportunities in the Euro-Mediterranean region

Prosperity and sustainability in the Euro-Mediterranean region require a closer cooperation among Countries. Education, research and innovation offer important solutions to the many challenges shared in the region.

The presentation will explore the UfM policy framework from an institutional perspective, the role of education and skills for sustainable development and economic growth in the Mediterranean, and the need to work together as scientific and diplomatic communities for tackling world-changing challenges such as climate change and food security.

Giuseppe Provenzano manages the dossier of Research and Innovation at the Union for the Mediterranean, where he focuses on topics connected to Mediterranean research, science diplomacy, and employability. He coordinates initiatives that strengthen regional cooperation and dialogue addressing topics including inclusive and sustainable development and integration in the Euro-Mediterranean area. A key focus is to promote science diplomacy, science-policy interface, South-South collaboration, champion job creation, and foster cross-country dialogue efforts. He has previously published on Blue Economy, the EU external policies towards Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, and on sustainability issues of the Iranian energy policies.
