Preserving the Past, Shaping the Future: Safeguarding Mediterranean Heritage
17 November 2026. From 18:00 To 19:30 | Conference | English | Palau Macaya, BarcelonaProtecting cultural and natural heritage is a central matter, particularly in the Mediterranean, where rapid urbanisation, climate change, and mass tourism place increasing pressure on historic sites and cultural landscapes. In this session, Rawda Abdelhady, Founding Director of Raquda Foundation for Art and Heritage, will explore innovative approaches to preserving heritage while ensuring its relevance for contemporary communities.
Drawing on the work of the Raquda Foundation, Abdelhady will highlight initiatives focused on heritage conservation, public engagement, and capacity-building; ranging from safeguarding archaeological sites to promoting awareness through education and community outreach. Her expertise in virtual conservation and underwater archaeology also opens new possibilities for documenting and reconstructing endangered heritage, particularly in fragile or inaccessible environments.
With a multidisciplinary background spanning archaeology, conservation, and site management, Abdelhady brings a forward-looking perspective on heritage protection. Her work demonstrates how combining technology, policy development, and local participation can strengthen resilience and ensure that cultural heritage continues to serve as a source of identity, knowledge, and sustainable development for Mediterranean societies.
