Palestine through Visual Arts: An Artistic First-Person Experience

She graduated in 1976 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cairo and continued her studies of etching and painting at the Accademia Delle Belle Arti in Florence. Her artwork focuses on her perceptions of the Palestinian reality under occupation. Badran explores topics such as the human condition, collective memory, confinement and the fragmentation of the land. She dominates several artistic techniques, including ink drawings, watercolour, acrylic painting, collage, and animation, among others. She directed the short film Memory of the Land (2017), which won Best Experimental Film at the Nazra Palestine Film Festival 2018. Her artwork has been exhibited in cities like Jerusalem, Ramallah, Baghdad, Beirut, Amman, New York, London and Paris.
About the conference
Samira’s artistic practice is based on the observation, using designs and photography as tools for exploration. She is interested in transforming and reformulating visual references to create new realities, which communicate messages and emotions. During the lecture, Badran will explore the contexts of geographical immobility, geography of the body and emotional geography among others, and will share her creative process through a series of drawings, photographs, installations and moving images.
