In the framework of the EU-funded project MAGIC, the IEMed hosts the debate “Media, democracy and diversity”. The event will count with the opening remarks of Senén Florensa, Executive President, European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), Núria Serra, Head of the Department of Interculturality and Religious Pluralism, Barcelona City Council, and Manuela Fernández Ruiz, Director of the Office for Equal Treatment and Non-discrimination of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Rizwana Hamid, director of the Centre for Media Monitoring (United Kingdom), Xavier Giró, professor of journalism at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Alaaddine Azzouzi, a reporter at VilaWeb, are among the speakers of this debate wich will be moderated by Lali Sandiumenge, freelance journalist, associate professor of journalism at the UAB and former correspondent for various media outlets in Morocco and Egypt.

They are addressing the growth of extreme political positions, the polarization of societies, the risk of rupturing coexistence, and the weakening of European democracies and how objective and rigorous journalism can guarantee inclusive narratives, a suitable environment for the free circulation of information, and ensure informed and critical public opinion, the backbone of democratic, plural and diverse societies.

This debate is held back-to-back with the Ideas and Coalition Hub of the project MAGIC that takes place at the IEMed on the 21st and 22nd of November. See some interviews with participants of the hub.

MAGIC is a project which aims to prevent gendered Islamophobia in Spain and in Belgium, in particular in media outlets, and to draw lessons useful for other European countries. It is funded by the European Commission, within the framework of the Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) Programme.
