Expanding access to safe, inclusive, and accessible public spaces is at the heart of SDG 11. Mediterranean cities are facing rising temperatures, density, and social fragmentation. In this session, Gonçalo Canto, Advisory Board Member of GreenInCities, will explore how urban greenery and public space design can foster healthier, more cohesive communities.

Building on European initiatives such as nature-based solutions and urban regeneration projects, Canto will highlight how green corridors, participatory design, and inclusive planning can transform underused or vulnerable neighbourhoods into vibrant, multifunctional spaces. Projects linked to GreenInCities and related research programmes demonstrate how integrating biodiversity, climate adaptation, and social inclusion can enhance both environmental performance and quality of life.

With a background in architecture and urban research, Canto brings a strong interdisciplinary perspective on the role of public space in contemporary cities. His work shows how co-creation processes – engaging residents, institutions, and local stakeholders – can ensure that green urban interventions are not only sustainable, but also equitable, accessible, and rooted in the everyday needs of communities.
