Reducing the environmental impact of cities is a key priority, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas where waste generation and air pollution pose significant challenges. In this session, Yassine Mazzout, President of AT-TAWAFOUK Cooperative, will present how inclusive waste management models can drive both environmental and social transformation.

Based at the Oum Azza landfill, AT-TAWAFOUK has pioneered an approach that integrates informal waste pickers into a structured cooperative system, improving working conditions while increasing recycling rates and resource recovery. Through efficient sorting processes and circular economy practices, the cooperative contributes to reducing landfill pressure, lowering emissions, and promoting more sustainable urban ecosystems.

With over a decade of leadership in the sector, Mazzout brings hands-on experience in building community-based solutions that combine economic viability with social inclusion. His work highlights how empowering local actors and formalising informal systems can play a crucial role in advancing cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Mediterranean cities.
