Mobiliser la jeunesse pour la protection de l’environnement
23 octobre 2024. À partir de 18:00 à 19:30 | Conférence | Anglais | Espanol | CaixaForum Macaya, BarcelonaPlastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea has become a critical environmental issue, posing significant threats to marine life, ecosystems, and coastal communities. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in the Mediterranean, making it one of the most polluted seas in the world. This pollution not only harms wildlife but also impacts human health.
The root of this problem lies not only in the sheer volume of plastic waste produced but also in deeply ingrained societal habits. Single-use plastics, poor waste management practices, and a lack of awareness about the consequences of plastic pollution have all contributed to the current crisis. To address this, it is essential to shift societal mentalities towards more sustainable behaviours, emphasizing the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastics. Youth involvement is crucial in driving this change. Young people are not only the most affected by long-term environmental degradation but also possess the energy, creativity, and ability to influence their peers and communities.
Deeply committed to the fight against plastic pollution, Manar Elkebir, a storyteller, National Geographic Young Explorer, founded EcoWave, a youth-led environmental organisation in Tunisia. Manar’s mission is to galvanize young people in her community to tackle global environmental issues and develop existing solutions to make change. Growing up in Gabes, along the Mediterranean coast, she led successful campaigns to educate her local community about plastic pollution. She has received recognition for her work as Global Leader of Solutions to Plastic Pollution from Algalita Research and Education, Ocean Hero 2019, and Conrad Innovator. Manar has spoken at international events across the world and has used her influence to work with governmental leaders and business executives to make sustainable decisions across her country and beyond.
