How do interaction mechanisms allow us to understand migratory dynamics over time, from within and outside networks?

Based on data from the THEMIS 1 survey and interviews conducted in Algarve with Moroccan migrants and in Lisbon metropolitan area with Brazilian and Ukrainian migrants, Maria Lucinda Fonseca explores what role does the interaction play in migration between three countries and Portugal, all in the context of a severe economic crisis.

While recognizing the importance of other forms of interaction, the study focuses on the content of information-type interaction sent through migrant personal networks, to assess the propensity of settled migrants to demotivate other potential migrants. The results show how the development of interaction mechanisms in the light of economic depression depends on a complex context where individual characteristics and structural circumstances in the country of origin and destination are mixed, as well as influences, mostly, of individuals who already have aspirations to migrate.
