The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war have strong implications for the countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean: food insecurity, rising energy prices and the search for alternative sources, as well as shocks to labor markets. Public opinion in the region sympathizes with Ukrainians who live in fear of Russian weapons but at the same time does not forget that the international community did not react in the same way in Syria. Their governments are torn between now antagonistic loyalties and strategic interests (Russia or the Western camp led by the United States) and are acting with great caution to better weather the impact of the war and the consequences of the sanctions imposed on Russia.

In this context, within the framework of the Aula Mediterrània inter-university program and with collaborators from the IEMed Mediterranean Yearbook, we organized a debate to analyze the impact of the war in the Mediterranean, especially on the geopolitics of energy in the region, the political effects and socioeconomic conditions in the Arab countries, and the evolution of a key country like Turkey, mired in a deep economic crisis, a member of NATO and at the same time a prominent interlocutor with the Kremlin.
