The popular movements of 2019 and 2020 made it clear that the Algerian population wanted to promote changes. According to the observers of the country, despite the official proclamations of a “new Algeria”, the traditional authoritarian system is maintained.

At an economic level, the high price of oil and gas allows Algeria to enjoy an unbeatable situation not only for maintaining generous social policies but also for being a coveted actor on the international scene.

All of this leads the country to postpone measures to diversify the economy and prolongs the disconnection between the states of power and the population’s aspirations for change, as researcher Laurence Thieux points out in the IEMed Mediterranean Yearbook 2023.

We will talk about the socio-political and economic situation in Algeria, with a special impact on the situation of freedom of information, with the Algerian Tin Hinane El Kadi, member of the advisory board of the IEMed Mediterranean Yearbook, researcher of the Maghreb and Near East program of the London School of Economics.

Co-organized by the IEMed and the College of Journalists of Catalonia, the meeting with her will take place on Thursday, October 26, at 10 a.m., at the College of Journalists.

On the occasion of the meeting, the new edition of the IEMed Mediterranean Yearbook 2023 will be handed to attendees. The Yearbook is the flagship publication of the IEMed. In this edition more than 65 international experts analyse the consequences for Europe and the Mediterranean of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, China’s influence in the Mediterranean, migrations, digital and green transitions, and the most relevant facts and trends in the European Mediterranean countries, the Balkans, the Maghreb and the Near East, as well as in strategic sectors such as security and the economy. It includes statistics, socio-economic indicators, graphs, timelines and maps.

The event will be held in English. By invitation only.
