From Fish to Fork: Reconnecting with the Sea that Feeds Us

Responsible and sustainable fishing is vital to preserving the Mediterranean’s fragile marine ecosystems and supporting the coastal communities that depend on the sea. As overfishing and environmental degradation continue to threaten fish stocks, promoting more sustainable practices and consumption habits has become increasingly urgent. In this context, traditional and small-scale fisheries play a key role—not only by providing fresh, local seafood and maintaining cultural heritage, but also by employing more selective and environmentally conscious methods. Yet, the social fabric of the sector remains incomplete without recognising the often-invisible role of women. Women, though often overlooked, are essential to the sector, contributing across the value chain—from processing to sales—and must be more fully recognised and included in shaping its sustainable future.

Bringing these issues to life requires not just policies, but people who can inspire a shift in how we relate to the sea. Scientists, educators, and community advocates are building bridges between consumers and the fishing sector, reconnecting urban societies with traditional knowledge, marine stewardship, and sustainable food systems. One such voice is Anna Bozzano, whose work blends marine science with public engagement to foster a deeper awareness of the sea’s value and vulnerability.

With a background in marine biology and a strong commitment to ocean advocacy, Bozzano launched El Peix al Plat in 2013 to help people rediscover their connection to the sea through education, cultural experiences, and responsible tourism. After spending nearly 20 years in international marine research—studying fisheries, sharks, and marine ecology—she turned her attention to public engagement and science outreach. Her work highlights the fishing heritage of Barcelona, particularly the Cofradía de Pescadores, offering first-hand experiences that shed light on the ecological and cultural significance of sustainable seafood. Drawing on her scientific expertise and a passion for storytelling, Bozzano works to build a more informed and respectful relationship between society, the sea, and the food we consume.
