A seminar held today at the IEMed with participation of journalists, academics and institutional and civil society representatives kicked off a project led by the IEMed and the Al Fanar Foundation to monitor Islamophobia in the media.

The Observatory of Islamophobia in the Media will monitor six written media (La Vanguardia, El Mundo, La Razón, 20 minutos, El País and Diario.es) to detect, on the one hand, information that stigmatizes Muslims and, on the other, issue recommendations for a narrative “more inclusive and adjusted to reality ”.

With the desire to reflect on the objectives of the Observatory, experts from academia, journalists from the media being monitored and representatives of institutional and civil society have been invited today to participate in a seminar making the launching of the  project. During the seminar, the types and degrees of Islamophobia present in the Spanish written press were analyzed and the observatory’s working method, protocols and long-term objectives were discussed.

The observatory is an initiative of the IEMed and the Al Fanar Foundation, with the support of the Tres Culturas Foundation, Casa Árabe and the Euroárabe Foundation.

The work of the observatory will soon be available at www.observatorioislamofobia.org
