The historic agreement on Iran’s nuclear program reached with six international powers on July 14 in Vienna has opened high expectations for both Iranian civil society and the economy and for the role that the country can play in regional stability.

In an interview on the program El matí on Ràdio 4 (RNE), Lurdes Vidal, head of the Arab World and Mediterranean department at the IEMed, analyzes the repercussions of the agreement.

Not everyone wins with the deal, Vidal explains. “Israel and the Gulf countries see their strategic alliance with Washington and therefore their privileged role in the region jeopardized”.

An Iran freed from sanctions and incorporated into the international community will also be able to develop its full economic potential and assert both its military weight to detain Islamic State and its diplomatic weight to intervene in the conflicts. Specifically, Vidal points out, Iran can play a decisive role in a negotiated solution to the conflict in Syria.
