Addressing the issue of gender and development in southern countries reveals key issues for the condition of women. Well-known issues: the fight for equality between women and men, effective respect for sexual and reproductive health rights, the eradication of all forms of discrimination and violence … Gender issues enclose important issues for the development of the countries of the South as a whole, because women do not always benefit from the fruits and programs of development, on the contrary discrimination against women is in itself an obstacle to development.

Awareness of the importance of gender equality is growing, but women are still far from being fully citizens in countries like Morocco. This discrimination slows down the advance of this southern Mediterranean country.Zohra Koubia, member of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) and founder and president of the Forum des Femmes au Rif, talks about all this, hence a significant change has been made in the perception of women by promoting their socio-economic development and their rights, as well as the role they play in the society of northern Morocco. The forum in particular was born with the objective of participating in local women’s associations to achieve an effective integration of women in public bodies and fight for the change of the Mudawana.
