Arab Development Challenges Report 2011

27 February 2012 | Conference | IEMed, Barcelona

Entitled “Towards the Developmental State in the Arab Region,” the new Arab Development Challenges 2011 report of the United Nations Development Program on the challenges facing the Arab world to drive development appears in a context of profound changes in political, economic and social systems and in full redefinition of the relationship between state and society and also of the economic model.

The document warns that without social justice and economic improvements the democratic transitions of the Arab Spring could end up frustrating. Following its presentation in Cairo last week, the report is being presented to the IEMed.

The report not only provides valuable analytical material to understand the complex and heterogeneous reality of economic, human, environmental and social development, but also proposes measures and reforms to build a new political and economic model to meet the demands of social justice and the dignity of citizens. In this sense, it points out the problems that have affected the development of the Arab world for many years as well as realistic measures and political decisions that will allow us to take advantage of the “window of opportunity” posed by the transitions initiated with the Arab Spring.
