The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation is the first institution created by the 35 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership with the objective of improving reciprocal understanding and the quality of cultural dialogue between the two sides of the Mediterranean.
The Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation responds to one of the structural challenges of the cooperation framework created in 1995, on the occasion of the 1st Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Barcelona that marked the start of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. The Barcelona Process outlined a broad framework of political, economic and social relations between the member states of the European Union and the partner countries of the Mediterranean. The 5th Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Valencia (2002) definitively encouraged the initiative and approved the creation of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation.
Its main objectives are to identify, develop and foster areas of cultural convergence between the Mediterranean countries seeking closeness and understanding between their peoples and the improvement of their reciprocal perception. Thus, the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation encourages cultural dialogue, supports exchanges, cooperation and mobility of people, particularly among the young, and organises activities within the framework of the Barcelona Process.
Conceived as a “network of networks”, the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation is formed by its headquarters in Alexandria and made up by 35 national networks. Each network comprises bodies, centres, associations, university departments, NGOs and institutions from the 35 member countries of the Partnership; all this so that the Foundation can present itself as a powerful structure with a truly Mediterranean scope.
The Spanish Network of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation is formed by 82 members incorporating different bodies and organisations from civil society. The IEMed was appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Coordinator of the Spanish Network.
