04/03/2010 In Barcelona from 4th to 7th March, more than 800 distinguished representatives of civil society from 43 Euro-Mediterranean countries are participating in a forum organised by the Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed. The objective is to debate ideas to promote cultural dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean and take the final conclusions to the summit of the Union for the Mediterranean, to be held in Barcelona in June. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean gets underway in Barcelona 04/03/2010 The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the partnership in which the EU and the 16 southern and eastern Mediterranean countries work for stability, prosperity and dialogue in the region, has presented its headquarters and secretary-general. Today, the Secretary-General of the UfM, Ahmad Masadeh, has been officially introduced in a formal ceremony at the Palau de Pedralbes, the headquarters of this international organisation. Four Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Spain, Egypt, Jordan and France) and many authorities participated. Senén Florensa, Director General of the IEMed, also took part in the event which represents the start of a new stage of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, born in Barcelona in 1995. (Expanded news)

The IEMed points out the advantages of an advanced statute for Morocco ahead of the summit with the EU 03/03/2010 The IEMed proposes specific measures and actions to advance EU relations with Morocco in a new issue of the collection “DocumentsIEMed.”. Written by Larabi Jaidi and Iván Martín, the document seeks to contribute to the debates of the first EU-Morocco summit, to take place on 6th and 7th March in Granada. Since 2007, the IEMed has strengthened its actions aimed at the analysis and monitoring of the advanced statute of the European Union with Morocco. (Expanded news)
A conference during Egyptian Week in Barcelona explores ways of funding UfM projects 03/03/2010 In the framework of Egyptian Week in Barcelona, the IEMed has organised the conference “Union for the Mediterranean: Project Funding”. The event was attended by the Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, Rachid Mohamed Rachid, and representatives of Spanish companies such as Agbar, Unión Fenosa, Iberdrola, “la Caixa”, Spanair or Banc Sabadell and training centres such as ESADE. Erdogan asks for Turkey´s EU membership process to continue 20/02/2010 Today, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has reiterated his country’s aspirations to join the European Union and expressed his gratitude to the Spanish Government for its support. He did so in a speech during the Foro de la Nueva Economía, which had the support of the IEMed and coincides with the second high level meeting between Spain and Turkey. (Expanded news)
The anthropologist Dale F. Eickelman analyses Islam in contemporary societies 18/02/2010 Dale F. Eickelman, a specialist in the anthropology of Islam and the Middle East, has today delivered the lecture “The Transformation of Islam in Contemporary Societies” in the framework of a new debate organised in collaboration with the US Consulate. This is an event prior to the World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES). (Expanded news)
