Debate
on "Europe in the World of the Future"
Hubert
Védrine, former Foreign Minister for France,
and Josep Piqué, former Foreign Minister for
Spain, will take part in the debate held in the European
Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) entitled “Europe
in the World of the Future”. The event will
be hosted by Senén Florensa, director general
of the IEMed, and overseen by Rafael Jorba, a journalist
who writes for Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

Presentation of The Yacoubian Building,
literary success in the Arab world, in the IEMEd
To
mark the presentation of the book The Yacoubian Building (published
in Catalan by Edicions de 1984), the IEMed, in collaboration with cultural organisation
Casa Árabe,
has organised a round table entitled “Egypt through the literary glass”.
The event will be attended by the book’s author, Alla Al Aswani, the
former Spanish ambassador in Egypt, Pedro López de Aguirrebengoa, and
the translator of the book from Arabic to Catalan, Pius Alibek. First published
in 2002, The Yacoubian Building was the bestselling book in the Arab world
for several years.

A book
examines agricultural challenges
and opportunities
for the Euromediterranean Association
The
book La agricultura y la Asociación Euromediterránea:
retos y oportunidades (Agriculture and the Euromediterranean
Association: Challenges and Opportunities), will be presented at the University of Lleida by Senén
Florensa, director general of the IEMed, Josep Maria Jordán, professor
of applied economics at the University of Valencia and
co-editor of the book, Joan Viñas, rector of the
University of Lleida, and Joaquim Llena, agricultural
councillor for the Autonomous Government of Catalonia.

Inauguration in Barcelona of the " Ramon Llull
and the Meeting of Two Cultures" exhibition
To
mark the 700th anniversary of Ramon Llull’s residence in
the Algerian city of Béjaïa, the European Institute of the
Mediterranean (IEMed) has organised an exhibition on
Llull’s life,
work and thought, with special emphasis on his interest
in Muslim and Islamic culture. The "Raimundus,
christianus arabicus. Ramon Llull and the Meeting of Two
Cultures" exhibition will be inaugurated by the president
of the autonomous government of Catalonia, José Montilla, in the
exhibition hall of the Royal Academy of Belles Lettres.
The exhibition has been on show in Algeria throughout March and will
be transferred
to Palma de Majorca for the period between the 9th
and 27th of May.

magazine, which is published quarterly
in both Spanish and French by the European
Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed)
and the Spanish Foreign Office, also looks
at the state of Spanish relations with
the Maghreb following the recent royal
visit to Algeria and the last High Level
Meeting between Spain and Morocco, and
includes analytical articles on the role
of the US in the Near East or the lessons
that can be learnt from the development
of the Barcelona Process on the involvement
of the USA in Europe and the Mediterranean.
