Second Meeting of Festivals and Music of the Mediterranean
The second edition of the Meeting of Festivals and Music of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the Mercè 2006, will be celebrated in the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona on September 21 and 22. It is a seminar aimed at the exchange of knowledge between professionals of the music sector in the north of Africa, and the EIMed collaborates with it.

Cinema from the Maghreb in the International
Festival of
San Sebastiánià
The International Cinema Festival of San Sebastián is home from September 21 to 30 to the 2nd edition of Films in Progress, an annual professional appointment for the film directors from the Maghrib and the Portuguese-speaking African countries. This initiative, supported, as last year, by the EIMed, looks for ways to materialise projects and films and be a bridge between professionals, companies and institutions of these countries, Europe and Latin America.

The Algerian philosopher Mustapha Cherif will give the opening
lesson of the new year in the UOCC
On the occasion of the opening ceremony of the academic year 2006-2007 of the Catalan Open University (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, UOC), Dr. Mustapha Cherif, an Algerian philosopher and lecturer in the University of Alger, will give the opening lesson, “Apprendre a vivre ensemble”. Cherif has collaborated several times with the EIMed, he founded the University of Continuous Education in Algeria, and he was ambassador and minister of Higher Education. He is the author of “L’Islam, tolérant ou intolérant” (publishing house: Odile Jacob, Paris, 2006). The event will take place in the institutional seat of the UOC in Barcelona.

On September, 16th-24th 2006, GAAEC will host the first session of the Euro-Med Journalism Institute (EMJI). This new program, co-organized with The Fund for American Studies (TFAS), is designed to enrich young journalists and students of journalism professionally, and present them with issues that are of great interest to contemporary reporters, especially to those dealing with the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean region. The 2006 session, with activities in Athens and Andros will have a strong focus on politics, incorporating panel discussions with politicians and lectures on political topic.(+)

Euro-Med Energy Forum
This Forum will be held within the framework of the Euro-Med economic and financial partnership. Its objective is to analyse the situation of MEDA and EIB regional projects underway in this field and to examine the evolution perspectives of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation with a view to the Energy Ministerial Conference to be organised in 2007. Participants in this Forum will be Energy Managers in the pertinent Ministries as well as representatives from financial institutions such as the EIB and the World Bank. The meeting will be divided into four work sessions devoted to energy security in the Mediterranean region; the presentation of monitoring reports on the implementation of a Euro-Mediterranean energy policy; the financial instruments aimed at promoting the rational usage of energy and renewable energy sources as well as the scheduling of a work programme for the Euro-Mediterranean ministerial meeting. This seminar is the third preparatory meeting of the EuroMeSCo Conference 2006. It is organised by the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches en Sciences Sociales (CERSS) in Rabat in collaboration with the EuroMeSCo secretariat at the Instituto de Estudos Estratégicos e Internacionais (IEEI) in Lisbon and with the support of the European Commission.The event will deal with issues such as “the political context: individual rights and political transition”, “the legal and social context of human rights” and “human rights within the Euro-Mediterranean agenda”. Twenty-four volunteer youth workers from Egypt, Turkey, Germany and Italy will be trained and an intercultural handbook on the experience will be produced.(+)
