Welcome

Welcome,

I Conferčncia Euromediterrŕnia (Barcelona, novembre de 1995) We are pleased to welcome you to the Barcelona+10 website. Here you will find a wide range of information about the activities to take place in Barcelona during the month of November 2005, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration. You will also find opinions and information on the ten years of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership’s existence, as well as proposals for and reflections on the future.

In 1995, the foreign affairs ministers of the European Union and 12 more countries of the Mediterranean met in Barcelona to initiate a common project, known since then as the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. The resulting Barcelona Declaration is, still today, the main reference of the efforts to construct an area of peace and prosperity around the Mediterranean.

Ten years later, on 27th and 28th November 2005, the heads of state and of government of the European Union –now enlarged to twenty-five members– will meet for the first time with their counterparts from the ten non-member Mediterranean states, to relaunch the Partnership. It will be a historic moment and it is satisfying that they have once again chosen Barcelona to hold the meeting.

As in 1995, the diverse institutions and governments, as well as the institutions and bodies representative of civil society, wish to be present on this occasion. To this end, we foster meetings of parliamentarians, mayors, regional presidents, the media, women and many other kinds of actors, in order to debate the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and take our conclusions to the summit. These activities around the summit will begin two weeks before and finish one day after.

So we make this website available to provide you with detailed and wide-ranging information about the meetings and activities around the summit. We hope that it responds to the increasing interest in the Euro-Mediterranean area that we are constructing.

Please accept our warmest welcome.

Pasqual Maragall,
President of the Government of Catalonia
