“Ramadan Nights” and an exhibition on the Mediterranean at Expo 2010 Shanghai, September’s top activities
30/07/2010- The first days of September will see two important IEMed activities. On the one hand, the exhibition “The Mediterranean, the Other Origin of the World”, will open on 1th September at Expo 2010 Shanghai. On the other, the third “Ramadan Nights” will be held from 5 September, this year dedicated to the famous Egyptian singer Oum Kalsoum.
FOCUS examines climate change, energy and free trade in the Mediterranean
28/07/10 - FOCUS offers three new articles on key issues for the Euro-Mediterranean region. Aylin Age, professor at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara), explores the future viability of the free trade area. The engineer and former director of the Algerian electricity and gas company (Sonelgaz), Abdenour Keramane, looks at the challenges presented by energy resources, and Marina Markovic, from the UN Environment Programme, analyses the strategies for protecting the coast from the effects of climate change.

More than 2,700 participants in the World
Congress
for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES)
23/07/10- More than 2,500 participants from 72 countries have participated from 19th to 23th July in Barcelona in the World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES).
The opening speech was delivered by Prince Hassan Bin Talal of Jordan in a ceremony chaired by Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira, Vice-President of the Government of Catalonia. Organised by the IEMed, the Congress has offered a programme of 500 academic sessions in 18 disciplines, focusing on the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Muslim Asian States.

Baro Banda opens the “Summer Nights”
programme of solidarity at the Palau Robert
1/07/10- This year, the IEMed is once again supporting “Summer Nights” at the Palau Robert, which began today with the performance by the Turkish band Baro Banda. This cultural programme, offering open-air concerts and cinema every Thursday in July, collects voluntary contributions for the Vicente Ferrer Foundation in India.

The journal afkar/ideas analyses the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
29/06/10- The new issue of the journal afkar/ideas analyses the perspectives over the next few months for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the political and social situation both in Israel and the West Bank and Gaza, the role of the USA and the EU in the region and the struggle for control of East Jerusalem. afkar/ideas also examines the evolution of the Union for the Mediterranean, as well as the role of sovereign wealth funds in the global economy and religious freedom in the Maghreb.
