DEBATES ON THE MEDITERRANEAN

PRESENTATION

“Migrations and social change in the European Mediterranean” cycle of conferences

The growing economic, demographic, political and security disparities between countries of origin and host nations are key to understanding the migratory flows between countries to the South and those to the North of the Mediterranean. Such imbalances, as well as geographical proximity, would account for the fact that Europe is and will continue to be the chief destination for migrations in the Mediterranean, despite the continuing attempts to reduce the entry of immigrants, be they legal or illegal or asylum seekers.

The lectures offer an analysis in relation to immigration at a time when the speed and intensity of migratory events experienced in Mediterranean Europe in recent years require us to take stock and consider the principal effects that this will have in terms of population dynamics, with particular impact on the labour market, as well as on policies linked to public welfare, health and educational provision.

IEMed is organising this series of lectures as a complementary activity to the Interdisciplinary Master’s Degree in Contemporary Migration, coordinated by the Centre for Migration Studies and Research (CERM) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. (Registration now open)

The series of lectures, which are open to the public, will be delivered at the assembly hall of IEMed over 6 sessions across a period between October 2008 and June 2009, in tandem with the schedule for the CERM Master’s course.
